![]() Our original plan was to retire Plex Media Player entirely, and with it, our support for TV modethe 10 foot. The main appeal for the Plex Pass option is probably the option to download music for offline playback - it's great to keep the music going when you pass into a dead zone for cell signals, or if your server at home has a problem. It was intended to replace the aging Plex Media Player’s (aka PMP) desktop mode, bringing best-in-class playback capabilities, support for Downloads, and more, in an app that was focused on the desktop experience. It's great to see Plexamp expand to all Plex users, and there's a surprising amount of features that are now free to everyone. The new desktop app is notably lacking TV mode. For the TV layout lovers out there, we want to be clear about this: the long-term plan is for the new desktop app to replace Plex Media Player as our only desktop solution. It’s also everywhere you’d want to be, including iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, and Linux." The desktop side of the (admittedly Janus-esque) Plex Media Player will live on in the form of the new desktop app. Our immediate goal was to be on the platform at launch, which means we didn’t have much time. As a standalone application, it provides a (highly customizable) focused experience for music, with features found nowhere else. The instant the fourth generation Apple TV was announced with an app store, we here at Plex pumped our fists in the air with excitement, as we raced to download the new Xcode and read the developer documentation. Over the years Plexamp has evolved from a small, highly opinionated music player, to being the flagship place for music in Plex. Built by a handful of people in their spare time, Plexamp may or may not have started over a few whisky sours. It was one of the early fruits of Plex Labs-the place for employee passion projects and community creativity. Plex said in a blog post, "Plexamp was born out of a combination of passion for music and Plex. Plex is a media management platform with two parts: the media server software (Plex Media Server) and the new playback application (Plex), which replaces the Plex Media Player. ![]()
